Ingredients
Scale
Fried Onions
- 1 large onion, sliced into thin rings
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Sauce
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 2 teaspoons prepared horseradish
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Burgers
- 1 pound ground beef
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/3 cup Italian breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Other
- 4-6 slices bacon
- 4 burger buns
- Butter, for toasting buns
Instructions
- Cook the Onions: Slice the onion into thin rings. Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and add the onion rings. Cook for 20-25 minutes until they become nicely browned and caramelized, stirring every few minutes to prevent burning.
- Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, prepared horseradish, salt, and pepper. Stir well and refrigerate until needed to let the flavors meld.
- Fry the Bacon: While the onions cook, fry the bacon slices in a separate pan over medium heat for 10-15 minutes until crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- Preheat the Grill: Set your grill to high heat to prepare for cooking the burgers.
- Prepare the Burger Patties: In a bowl, combine ground beef, minced garlic, Italian breadcrumbs, egg, salt, and pepper. Be careful not to overwork the mixture. Form into four equal-sized patties and create a slight divot in the center of each to promote even cooking.
- Grill the Burgers: Turn the grill down to medium-high heat. Place the patties on the grill and cook for approximately 6 minutes on one side. Flip and cook for another 6 minutes, or until the burgers are cooked through to your liking.
- Toast the Buns: Preheat a skillet over medium-high heat on the stove. Butter the cut sides of the burger buns and place them buttered side down in the skillet. Toast for a few minutes until golden brown. For extra flavor, use some of the bacon fat in the skillet. Alternatively, toast buns on the grill.
- Assemble the Burgers: Spread the horseradish mayo sauce on the buns. Layer on the grilled burgers, crispy bacon slices, caramelized onions, and any other preferred toppings. Serve immediately and enjoy your flavorful beef burgers with bacon and horseradish mayo!
Notes
- Make sure to stir the onions frequently while cooking to avoid burning and achieve a perfect caramelization.
- Creating a divot in the center of the burger patties helps them cook evenly and prevents puffing up.
- Using bacon fat to toast the buns adds extra flavor and reduces dishwashing.
- You can adjust the horseradish quantity in the mayo sauce based on your preferred spice level.
- For juicier burgers, don’t overhandle the meat mixture when forming the patties.
