Ingredients
Scale
Cake
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 cup Coca Cola
- 1 cup salted butter
- 6 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
Frosting
- 1/2 cup salted butter
- 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 6 tablespoons Coca Cola
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 4 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
- Prepare the cake batter: In a saucepan, combine the 1 cup salted butter, 6 tablespoons cocoa powder, and 1 cup Coca Cola over medium heat. Stir until the butter is melted and the mixture is smooth. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and baking soda. Add the cocoa mixture, eggs, vanilla extract, and buttermilk to the dry ingredients. Mix well until the batter is smooth and well combined.
- Bake the cake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch cake pan. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pan. Bake for about 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove from oven and allow the cake to cool completely in the pan.
- Make the frosting: In a saucepan, combine 1/2 cup salted butter, 3 tablespoons cocoa powder, and 6 tablespoons Coca Cola. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Gradually add powdered sugar, stirring until smooth and the frosting reaches a spreadable consistency. If the frosting is too thick, add a little more Coca Cola; if too thin, add more powdered sugar.
- Frost the cake: Once the cake is completely cool, spread the frosting evenly over the top using a spatula or knife. Allow the frosting to set before serving.
Notes
- Ensure the cake is fully cooled before frosting to prevent melting.
- Use salted butter as specified, or unsalted butter plus a pinch of salt.
- Coca Cola adds moisture and a subtle caramel flavor, do not substitute unless you want to alter the cake’s signature taste.
- For a richer flavor, use Dutch-processed cocoa powder.
- The cake can be stored covered at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerated for up to a week.
