This comforting side dish is perfect for family dinners and holidays, with rich butter and milk ensuring a smooth texture and optional sour cream for extra creaminess. Finished with a touch of fresh herbs for garnish.
Ingredients
Scale
Potatoes
- 2 pounds russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
Dairy & Seasonings
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cubed
- 1/2 cup milk (or heavy cream for extra richness)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, or to taste
- 1/4 cup sour cream (optional, for extra creaminess)
Garnish
- Fresh chives or parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare Potatoes: Place the peeled and cut potatoes in a large pot and cover them completely with water. Add a pinch of salt to the water to season the potatoes as they cook.
- Cook Potatoes: Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and let the potatoes cook for 15-20 minutes until they are tender when pierced with a fork.
- Drain Potatoes: Drain the cooked potatoes thoroughly using a colander and return them to the pot for mashing.
- Add Dairy and Seasonings: Add the cubed butter, milk (or heavy cream), salt, and black pepper to the potatoes. Use a potato masher or a hand mixer to mash the mixture until it becomes smooth and creamy.
- Incorporate Sour Cream: Stir in the optional sour cream to enhance creaminess. Adjust the consistency by adding more milk or cream if the mash is too thick.
- Taste and Adjust: Taste the mashed potatoes and add more salt or pepper if needed to suit your preference.
- Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle freshly chopped chives or parsley over the top for flavor and visual appeal. Serve the mashed potatoes warm.
Notes
- Use russet potatoes for fluffier mashed potatoes or Yukon Gold for a creamier texture.
- Heavy cream can replace milk for richer mashed potatoes.
- Sour cream is optional but adds additional creaminess and a subtle tang.
- For a dairy-free version, substitute butter and milk with plant-based alternatives.
- To prevent lumps, mash potatoes while they are still hot.
- Fresh herbs like chives or parsley make a beautiful garnish and add a fresh flavor boost.
