Ingredients
Scale
Chicken Marinade
- 1 lb chicken breast
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
Gyro Assembly
- 4 pita breads
- 1 cup tzatziki sauce
- 1 cup chopped lettuce
- 1/2 cup diced tomatoes
- 1/4 cup sliced red onion
Instructions
- Marinate the Chicken: In a bowl, whisk together olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper to create the marinade. Add chicken breasts, ensuring they are fully coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 4 hours, to allow the flavors to infuse deeply.
- Cook the Chicken: Preheat a grill or skillet over medium heat. Remove chicken from marinade and cook for about 5–7 minutes on each side until the chicken is cooked through and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). Once cooked, allow the chicken to rest for a few minutes before slicing thinly.
- Assemble the Gyros: Warm pita breads slightly to make them pliable. Lay out each pita and layer evenly with sliced grilled chicken, followed by chopped lettuce, diced tomatoes, sliced red onion, and a generous spoonful of tzatziki sauce on top.
- Serve and Enjoy: Fold the pita over the fillings and serve immediately while warm to enjoy the fresh, vibrant flavors of this authentic Greek chicken gyro.
Notes
- Marinating the chicken for longer (up to 4 hours) enhances the flavor.
- Use a meat thermometer to ensure chicken is safely cooked to 165°F.
- Warm pita breads to prevent tearing when assembling.
- For extra flavor, you can add a sprinkle of crumbled feta cheese or a dash of smoked paprika.
