Description
Homemade Blueberry Butter is a deliciously smooth and naturally sweet fruit spread made by slow-cooking fresh or frozen blueberries with sugar, honey, and warm spices. Perfect for spreading on toast, pancakes, or stirring into yogurt and oatmeal, this American-style condiment combines the rich flavors of cinnamon and nutmeg with the bright tang of lemon juice. Easy to make on the stovetop, it offers a wholesome alternative to store-bought preserves and can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
Ingredients
Scale
Ingredients
- 4 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Combine Ingredients: In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine the blueberries, sugar, honey, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir well to integrate all the flavors.
- Simmer Mixture: Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low. Simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally, for 45 to 60 minutes, or until the mixture thickens and darkens in color, concentrating the flavors.
- Blend Until Smooth: Use an immersion blender directly in the saucepan to purée the mixture until silky smooth, or carefully transfer the mixture to a blender and blend until smooth. If thicker consistency is desired, return the puréed butter to the pot and simmer for a few more minutes.
- Cool and Store: Allow the blueberry butter to cool completely, then transfer it into clean jars. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks to maintain freshness and flavor.
Notes
- For an ultra-smooth texture, strain the butter through a fine mesh sieve after blending to remove any remaining solids.
- This blueberry butter is perfect for spreading on toast, pancakes, or swirling into yogurt or oatmeal for added flavor.
- If using frozen blueberries, no need to thaw before cooking; just increase simmering time slightly if needed.
