Description

This Homemade French Onion Dip is a classic party favorite with rich, caramelized onions blended into a creamy base of sour cream and mayonnaise. Perfect for dipping chips, veggies, or toasted bread slices.

Ingredients

Scale

Caramelized Onions:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 medium yellow onions, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Dip Base:

  • 1 1/2 cups sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize Onions: In a skillet, cook onions with butter, salt, pepper, and sugar until golden brown. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder. Let cool.
  2. Prepare Dip Base: Whisk sour cream and mayonnaise in a bowl. Fold in caramelized onions. Refrigerate for 1 hour.
  3. Serve: Stir dip before serving. Garnish with chives if desired.

Notes

  • This dip can be made up to 2 days ahead.
  • For a lighter option, use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream.
  • Pairs well with chips, veggies, or toasted baguette slices.
