Ingredients
Scale
For the Patties
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 green pepper, finely chopped
- ¼ cup bread crumbs
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons ketchup
- 1 teaspoon mustard
- ½ teaspoon dried parsley
- ½ teaspoon dried onion powder
- ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
For the Gravy
- 1 teaspoon oil
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1 ½ cups beef stock
- 1 teaspoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon dried onion powder
- ½ pound brown button mushrooms, sliced
Instructions
- Mix the Patty Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, finely chopped green pepper, bread crumbs, egg, ketchup, mustard, dried parsley, dried onion powder, and sea salt. Mix gently until well combined without overworking the meat to maintain tenderness.
- Form and Cook Patties: Shape the mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties. Heat 1 teaspoon of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and brown them on both sides for about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove patties from skillet and set aside.
- Prepare the Mushroom Gravy: In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook until softened and browned, about 5-6 minutes. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of flour over the mushrooms and stir well to coat. Gradually whisk in 1 ½ cups of beef stock until smooth.
- Simmer with Seasonings: Add 1 teaspoon ketchup, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, and ½ teaspoon dried onion powder to the gravy mixture. Stir well and bring to a gentle simmer, allowing the sauce to thicken, about 3-5 minutes.
- Combine Patties and Gravy: Return the browned patties to the skillet with the mushroom gravy. Spoon some of the gravy over the patties. Cover the skillet, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 15-20 minutes to let the flavors meld and the patties cook through.
- Serve and Enjoy: Once the patties are cooked and the gravy has thickened, remove from heat. Serve the Salisbury steaks hot with the rich mushroom gravy spooned over them, accompanied by your favorite sides like mashed potatoes or green beans.
Notes
- Do not overmix the beef to keep patties tender.
- Use fresh mushrooms for best flavor, but cremini or portobello can substitute.
- Adjust seasoning in the gravy to taste before serving.
