Description
Savory Caramelized Onion and Cheese Burgers are a delicious twist on a classic burger, featuring juicy beef patties topped with rich caramelized onions and gooey cheddar cheese. Perfect for a gourmet burger night at home!
Ingredients
Scale
For the Caramelized Onions:
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
For the Burgers:
- 1½ pounds ground beef (80/20)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 4 slices cheddar cheese (or Swiss)
- 4 burger buns
- mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato slices, and pickles (optional for serving)
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil and butter. Once melted, add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 25–30 minutes until golden brown and caramelized. Lower the heat as needed to prevent burning.
- Prepare the Burgers: Mix the ground beef with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Form into 4 equal patties. Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties for about 4–5 minutes per side, or until desired doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty to melt.
- Assemble the Burgers: Toast the burger buns if desired. Spread mayonnaise on the bottom bun, add lettuce and tomato, then place the burger patty, a scoop of caramelized onions, and any optional toppings. Top with the bun and serve hot.
Notes
- Caramelized onions can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 5 days.
- Swap cheddar for blue cheese or gruyère for a gourmet twist.
